7 best movies for… massive bass

Rattle your windows, rattle your neighbours’ windows – and rattle your very soul – with these subwoofer-shaking Blu-rays

Subwoofer-speaker-bass-loud-volume

When your friends come over for a soirée, you make sure your AV rack is littered with copies of films like Days of Heaven and Nader and Simin, A Separation. Maybe a Werner Herzog documentary or two. Just in case they decide to snoop while you pop to the kitchen for more brie. You know how it is.

When your other friends come over, it’s time to fire up the AV rig, break out the cheddar and treat yourself to some serious bass. Want some inspiration? Try these…

1 Cloverfield
There’s a giant monster on the loose in New York. No one knows what it is, where it came from, what it wants… or how to kill it. The entire movie is shot found-footage style, all from the point of view of one chap with a video camera who’s part of the fleeing mêlée. There are no sweeping city shots here; no majestic blockbuster-style musical crescendos. It’s all totally in your face, from the ground. And that, of course, means you’re right by the feet of the monster as it pounds buildings into dust…

When to crank it It won’t spoil anything to say that the army gets called in. Armies have tanks. You know what to do.

2 Saving Private Ryan
The opening sequence is one of the most memorable – and harrowing – of any film we’ve seen. And while that’s largely down to the visuals, the sound designer, Hollywood audio legend Gary Rydstrom – deserves special credit. Because director Steven Spielberg didn’t want the movie to sound “Hollywood”, you won’t get any of the regular gunshot or tank effects. What you do get is absolute accuracy. Rydstrom and his team recorded actual WW2 weapons and recreated the sounds of real vehicles (such as the German tanks, which didn’t have ball-bearings and so let out a terrifying metallic scream when they moved). Spielberg instructed cinemas to turn up the volume during screenings, too, so the audience would get the full effect. It’s no wonder Saving Private Ryan won an Academy Award for its audio…

When to crank it The whole way through. But if you only pick one moment, it’s got to be the final battle in the end. Again, tanks… but this time they’re menacing. Cold. Terrifying.

3 The Dark Knight
We can’t be sure, but Batman’s wheels might’ve had subwoofers mounted inside it, just to make it sound even more awesome. (That’s what we’d do if we were billionaire superheroes, anyway.) The entire soundtrack for this movie has jump-in-your-seat moments – but that’s partly down to director Christopher Nolan’s attention to detail. He wanted everything to sound real – so a lot of the sound used in the final mix is stuff they recorded on-set… even in the chase scenes. (Oh, and the sound of the Bat-bike? The sonic barbers-pole that is the Shepard tone).

When to crank it The truck-flip. It might not be push-your-guts-in bassy but it’s plenty powerful.

4 U-571
This 2000 film is the totally true story of how the Americans captured the Enigma machine from a German U-boat and then won the war. Except that it’s a complete fabrication – to the extent that the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair, said it was an “affront” to the British sailors who really did nab the machine… months before the US even entered the war. But the less said about the historical liberties taken with this film, the better. We’re talking about sound here – and if you spin this Blu-ray in your system you’re in for a treat. It won an Academy Award in 2000 for its audio editing, and was also nominated for the Best Sound Mixing gong.

When to crank it The depth-charge scenes. They produce frequencies below 25Hz (into “feel it rather than hear it” territory) and are commonly used to test subwoofers.

5 War of the Worlds
No, not the musical version (which, incidentally, you can win tickets to courtesy of LG here). And not the 1953 version either (although that really is worth watching). Oh, and not the 1938 Orson Welles radio version that sent parts of the Northeastern US and Canada into a mass panic. This 2005 iteration, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning, goes heavy on the sound pretty much from the get-go. It’s more staccato than the likes of Transformers (below), and that only serves to make the loud bits all the more punchy. Check out those deep bass drops, too…

When to crank it When the pods appear. It’s got everything: buildings smashing, aliens, the ground tearing… Man alive.

6 Transformers
Big, brash, check-your-brain-at-the-door stuff, this. And it really shouldn’t be anything else. There are plenty of moments that’ll set your dog howling and rattle the plates on the wall, of course – this is a Michael Bay film, after all – but a few stand out. You can’t go wrong with the Camaro’s V8 roar, for instance. And the first time you hear a transformation it’s something else – especially if your system is sorted. It’s a feast for the ears. But one moment stands out…

When to crank it There’s a climactic battle at the end (Michael Bay film, remember). Lots of explosions (Michael Bay film, remember). Lots of gunfire (Michael Bay film, remember). But when the super-slow-mo starts, and along with it the bass-drop? That.

7 Inception
BWWWWAAAAAAAARRRRMMMM!
When to crank it Whenever composer Hans Zimmer activates the trombones. (Or just click this.)
